Now, she's facing a different, and much more difficult challenge as she goes through a battle with breast cancer and can use the country's support.
A District woman has set up a fundraising effort on the reality star's behalf as the single mother of four embarks on what could be a lengthy journey after being diagnosed with metastatic invasive ductal carcinoma while also contending with a rare mutation.
"I was a candidate for genetic testing, where I learned that I am a carrier of a Palb2 mutation on my BRCA gene," the Howard University graduate said. "This is a hereditary and rare mutation that increases breast and ovarian cancer risk for its carriers.
"By the time I learned of my status it had metastasized to several lymph nodes; being a mom of four my life immediately shifted toward managing fighting this disease."
Through a GoFundMe campaign, friends and family hope to rally the community's support as she undergoes additional testing, biopsies, and adapts to chemo - all while taking care of her family.
"For anyone who knows me, I am normally the one to help versus asking for it. However assistance will ease the burden on my older children have been my right hand through all of this for the last five months," she said.
Free noted that due to her now slow reaction time, she is unable to drive safely, and they've been relying on rideshare drivers to make it to her appointments and to get her children to and from school at times.
"This is expensive, but necessary as it has impacted our finances," she added."I truly do appreciate any kindness that can come our way and will be forever grateful for the peace of mind as I prepare for surgery, followed by radiation.
"This is a marathon not a sprint, thank you for fighting the fight with us."
The family is no stranger to cancer battles, with Free's mother dying of the disease 24 years ago, according to the reality star on Instagram, where she vowed to keep fighting.
"The challenge was a staple for me growing up. Ayanna is an absolute gem, fighter , and stellar human being," one donor wrote. "Everyone should have her back in this fight. You got this Ayanna!"
Another added: "I remember watching you on one of the first challenges, and seeing you grieve over your mother. Truly an amazing woman! F cancer."
More than $15,000 was raised in just one day through hundreds of donors after the GoFundMe was created on Free's behalf out of Washington, DC.
"She is a survivor of many things and we all know she will be strong and get through this next battle," Rachel Robinson wrote. "We want to all give a little help to ease the burden and allow Ayanna to focus on her battle with breast cancer, her children, and allow her some rest."
